چکیده

Back Side Illumination (BSI) CMOS image sensors with two-layer photo detectors (2LPDs) have been fabricated and evaluated. The test pixel array has green pixels (2.2um x 2.2um) and a magenta pixel (2.2um x 4.4um). The green pixel has a single-layer photo detector (1LPD). The magenta pixel has a 2LPD and a vertical charge transfer (VCT) path to contact a back side photo detector. The 2LPD and the VCT were implemented by high-energy ion implantation from the circuit side. Measured spectral response curves from the 2LPDs fitted well with those estimated based on lightabsorption theory for Silicon detectors. Our measurement results show that the keys to realize the 2LPD in BSI are; (1) the reduction of crosstalk to the VCT from adjacent pixels and (2) controlling the backside photo detector thickness variance to reduce color signal variations.

Toward One Giga Frames per Second — Evolution of in Situ Storage Image Sensors

The ISIS is an ultra-fast image sensor with in-pixel storage. The evolution of the ISIS in the past and in the near future is reviewed and forecasted. To cover the storage area with a light shield, the conventional frontside illuminated ISIS has a limited fill factor. To achieve higher sensitivity, a BSI ISIS was developed. To avoid direct intrusion of light and migration of signal electrons to...

LARS II – A High Dynamic Range Image Sensor with a-Si:H Photo Conversion Layer

The rapidly growing market of industrial and automotive vision systems demands for image sensors with very high dynamic ranges of more than 100dB. State of the art linear imagers are not capable of delivering this signal range at standard video speeds while sensors with logarithmic signal compression suffer from high fixed pattern noise, low contrast and excessive temperature drift. The newly d...

The Mass Production of BSI CMOS Image Sensors

Numerous pixel design and process improvements have been driven by the need to maintain or improve image quality at an ever smaller pixel size. A major development in imager technology is the mass production of Backside Illumination (BSI) technology for image sensors at low cost and high yield. The Omnivision-TSMC R&D alliance has been focused on the development of a low cost BSI technology whi...

Photon Counting and Energy Discriminating X-Ray Detectors - Benefits and Applications

Since a few years the direct detection of X-ray photons into electrical signals is possible by usage of highly absorbing photo conducting materials (e.g. CdTe) as detection layer of an underlying CMOS semiconductor X-ray detector. Even NDT energies up to 400 keV are possible today, as well. The image sharpness and absorption efficiency is improved by the replacement of the unsharp scintillation...
